Sies’ photos show the rough and ready construction workers in what appears to be a ballet of precisely choreographed dance poses. Taut muscles, focused gaze, nerves well under control. They are a team who, like dancers or athletes after long and intensive practice, have coordinated their moves and rely on each other to be where they are needed.

Diplomat Levinus Warner (ca. 1618-1665) was commissioned in 1655 to represent the Dutch interests at the court of the sultan of the Ottoman Empire. He was very interested in the languages and cultures of the Middle East and brought a huge collection of manuscripts together. Since his death he gave this collection to the University of Leiden, the place where he had studied Oriental languages. The collection forms the heart of Turcksche Boucken.
